Juan Diego,a converted Catholic elderly man born under Aztec rule, follows the beautiful sound of birds and ends up coming face-to-face with a radiant apparition of the Virgin Mary. She appears as a native princess to him, calms the startled traveler, and assures him of who she is. She instructs Juan Diego to visit his bishop and ask that a temple be built on the site of her appearance, so that she will have a place to hear petitions and to heal the suffering of the Mexican people.“ The bishop doesn’t believe the peasant and it takes a sign delivered by Juan Diego of flowers that contain the image of Our Lady to convince the bishop. The temple is there today and serves as a popular pilgrimage site.
