St. Jude of Thaddaeus

Years:
1st Century AD
From:
Galilee
Patron Saint Of:
Desperate causes, desperate situations, lost causes
Feast day:
October 28

Jude was a relative of Jesus and one of the Twelve Apostles. His real name was Judas, but it was thought that writers shorten it to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed Jesus. Jude was the one who asked Jesus at the Last Supper why He would not manifest Himself to the whole world after His resurrection. He is also shown in images with a flame above his head to indicate his presence at Pentecost. Many in the faith invoke St.Jude when in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances just as their forefathers had done before them.
