Saint Monica is the mother of Saint Augustine. She was arranged in marriage at a very young age to a Roman pagan. She lived with him and his mother, who both had very big tempers. Monica had three children, including Augustine, but could not get them baptized due to her husband’s non-belief. Fortunately, through prayer, she convinced both her husband and mother-in-law to convert. Monica greatly struggled with Augustine’s bad behavior and non-Christian views. She followed Augustine to Milan and worked with Saint Ambrose (bishop of Milan) to convert Augustine to Christianity. She was then able to get Augustine baptized. She died prior to going on a mission with her son to evangelize in Africa.
