Saint Peter, who was also known as Simon Peter of Cephas, was one of Jesus’ Twelve Apostles and is considered the first Pope. He first encountered Jesus while fishing with his brother Andrew. Jesus told them to follow him, to become “fishers of men.” There are many stories in the Bible referencing Peter’s experiences, failings, and teachable moments. He is known for denying Jesus three times after Jesus was taken. Following the Resurrection, he affirmed his love for Jesus three times and was able to bring into balance his previous three denials. Peter was instrumental in bringing the Gospel to the Gentiles. There are many stories of angels helping Peter throughout his missions. Peter was crucified on the Vatican Hill upside down because he declared himself unworthy to die in the same manner as the Lord.
