It is believed that Saint Sebastian came from Southern France, was educated in Milan, Italy, and served in the Roman Army. He would later be promoted to serve in the Praetorian Guard to protect Emperor Diocletian. While in the army, he helped convert many to Christianity, including the local prefect. The Emperor found out, scolded Sebastian and ordered him to be killed by having him tied to a stake on a training field and used as target practice. He was thought to be dead, but after Sebastian recovered, he confronted Diocletian to criticize him for his persecution of the Christians. Diocletian, surprised that Sebastian was still alive, ordered him to be beaten to death with clubs.
