Saint Theresa’s religious formation was assisted by the Jesuit parish of the Sacred Heart. She left home at age 18 to pursue missionary work with the Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She then moved to Calcutta and taught at the St. Mary’s School for girls, eventually becoming principal. On a trip, Saint Theresa had a vision where Jesus revealed His pain at the neglect of the poor. He asked Mother Teresa to establish a religious community, Missionaries of Charity, dedicated to the service of the poorest of the poor. She started many orders and expanded across the world. She famously felt separated from God for most of her life (calling it “the darkness”). Mother Teresa left a testament of unshakable faith, invincible hope and extraordinary charity.
